Gems of Palm Coast & Flagler County
Tucked between the historic streets of St. Augustine and the buzzing shores of Daytona Beach lies a stretch of coastal Florida that many overlook—Palm Coast and Flagler County. With pristine beaches, scenic preserves, and charming local culture, this area offers a unique blend of relaxation and adventure. Here are some of the region's hidden gems worth discovering.
🌿 Natural Escapes
Princess Place Preserve
Located at the confluence of Pellicer Creek and the Matanzas River, Princess Place Preserve is a 1,500-acre sanctuary of Old Florida. Explore its hiking and equestrian trails, visit the historic lodge (home to Florida’s first in-ground swimming pool), and soak in panoramic views of unspoiled wilderness.
Washington Oaks Gardens State Park
This lush oasis offers beautifully maintained formal gardens nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Matanzas River. Walk among ancient oaks and vibrant flower beds, then cross the road to the park’s hidden gem: a coquina rock-strewn beach that feels like a scene from another world.
🏖️ Peaceful Beaches
Varn Park
A serene alternative to busier beaches, Varn Park offers uncrowded sands, covered picnic areas, and easy beach access. It’s ideal for a quiet walk, a peaceful swim, or simply soaking in the coastal beauty.
MalaCompra Greenway Trail & Beach
I spent my first two years in Palm Coast going to this beach almost daily. It's usually not too crowded, and it feels almost like your own private beach. The best part? Lots of shark teeth! I've found hundreds on this beach, sometimes finding multiple within 10 minutes of arriving.
You may also see some horses on this beach. And perhaps you'll see the gopher tortoise who lives near the entrance. Tell it I said hi!
🎨 Local Culture & Entertainment
European Village
Experience a taste of Europe in the heart of Palm Coast. With quaint boutiques, diverse restaurants, weekend markets, and live music events, the European Village is a lively gathering spot for both locals and visitors.
Flagler Auditorium & Art Scene
Support the arts by catching a show at the Flagler Auditorium or visiting the Flagler County Art League. Local artists and performers frequently showcase work inspired by the area’s unique landscape and culture.

Birding on the Great Florida Birding Trail
Flagler County is a birder’s paradise, with over 200 species spotted throughout its coastal and inland ecosystems. Grab your binoculars and explore the six designated birding trails, from marshlands to pine forests.

Take a relaxing stroll or bike ride through Linear Park, a quiet and shaded greenway popular with families and nature lovers. The St. Joe Walkway offers scenic river views, birdwatching opportunities, and peaceful rest areas.
